What? I have THE best job–I get to meet amazing families, snuggle their adorable little newborns, and to capture this tremendous milestone in their lives. This is certainly the case with baby Isabella, whom I got to snuggle and photograph very recently.

Just prior to our session, I asked Isabella’s mommy about her preference for colors. She said she loved greens, yellows, and other soft neutrals. I loved hearing her choices, as I just received a new “Lemons and Lemonade” backdrop. This is what I set up for us just prior to her arrival to the studio and the backdrop we started on for her newborn photo session.

I find that newborns are sleepiest after their feeding and car ride–this is the reason II ask parents to feed their newborn just prior to leaving their home. It is also why I start with the curly, sleepy au-natural portraits on the beanbag.

Since I knew her mom also loved neutrals, I also photographed a few newborn photos on an off-white backdrop, as well. I love the beautiful accessories that we added to her newborn portraits. My studio is fully stocked with hats, headbands, wraps, etc. for us to use during your newborn photo session.

Although every baby’s sleepiness level varies, Baby Isabella was incredibly sleepy during her photo session, so we quickly proceeded to our prop portion of a newborn photo session. Her mom picked out the bed and the woven basket from my newborn photo prop collection. We styled the props in the colors that mom had requested. These are the newborn portraits we captured…

Isabella’s baby shower and nursery are decorated in a Winnie The Pooh theme. Her mom brought in a “Hunny” pot as another prop for our session. Although I felt that the pot was not stable enough to place the baby into (at a newborn photo session SAFETY is always my #1 priority), I was able to create the portrait that her mama wanted via a composite. This portion of the photo session is always my favorite during a newborn photo session. I love creating portraits that show new family beginnings, their love and connection to one another. What should we do to prepare for our newborn photo session? What to expect during a newborn photo session? — are my most frequently asked questions from new parents just before their newborn and family photos. So, I decided to create a post explaining how to prepare for a newborn photo session.

First, I am truly honored to have the opportunity to capture this special time in family’s lives. I love capturing this beautiful milestone in my clients’ lives.

Studio: My studio is located at 378 South Main Street, Sharon, MA 02067. Pizza Market and Paris Nails and Spa are my neighbors at the Sharon Heights Plaza. Parking is available right next to the entrance.

What to Expect During a Newborn Photo Session?

Dress your baby in a zip up or button up sleeper, without a onesie and please feed your baby a nice full feeding right before leaving your home. Be sure to burp the baby really well after nursing. Even a little bit of gas can make a calm, sleepy baby, an uncomfortable one in seconds. Once at the studio, leave your baby in the car seat–I will take him and get him ready for his photos from there.

Please do not apply diaper cream on your newborn the morning of your newborn photo session.

It will be 80 degrees at my newborn photo studio. Due to this, I recommend you come dressed for a warm few hours.

Newborn photo sessions typically last 2-3 hours, sometimes a bit longer, depending on your baby’s sleepiness, desire to eat, etc. The easiest way to ensure a sleepy baby is the willingness to nurse/bottle feed on and off, as needed. If you are bottle feeding, bring enough bottles to last at least 4 hours.

I ask that you bring along a pacifier for your newborn photo session. Ev

en if you do not plan on using a pacifier at home, a pacifier helps me run a successfull newborn photo session and to transition your baby pose to pose.

Be patient. If a baby is fussy or alert, don’t stress out. Your newborn can sense your anxiety, and we want to keep the environment as mellow as possible. We will work to get your baby comfortable again. If it doesn’t happen, we will take a break or perhaps reschedule all together if absolutely necessary.

Be prepared for messes of all kinds. Your newborn baby does not care where/when and who to pee, poop or throw up on. This is why I recommend you bring a spare set of clothes.

Newborn Photo Session Wardrobe

Nothing is the best wardrobe for a newborn during the newborn photo session. No outfit fits a newborn well, and they often look swallowed in clothes. Accessories are good–little hats, dainty headbands, etc. I have a wide variety of props for us to use during your newborn photo session that I provide.

A Few Additional Thoughts About your Newborn Photo Session…

The family and sibling photos will be done at the end of the session, approximately 1-1.5 hours from the start of the se
ssion. If you live close, take two cars, you can call dad when your newborn’s solo photos are finished. If at all possible, I prefer for siblings not to stay at the studio during the baby’s portion of the photo session; as toddlers can be loud and distracting.

Tips for Booking a Newborn Photo Session

Are You Expecting? Time to start thinking maternity and newborn photos and finding the right maternity and newborn photographer for you.

There is so much to do when you are getting ready for the arrival of your new baby–cribs, diapers, strollers, car seats, the list can be long. Choosing your newborn and maybe maternity photographer is just as important–after all you and your child will treasure these images for years and perhaps generations to come. Here are some suggestions and tips for choosing the best photographer for you and your family.

Choosing a Style I believe, choosing a matenrity and newborn photographer is just as important as picking a wedding photographer, after all your baby will never be a newborn again and you want to have gorgeous photos that you will love. Check out photographers in your area (www.KaufmanPhoto.com), follow their Facebook pages (https://www.facebook.com/KaufmanPhoto/), connect on the phone or even in person. Carefully look through the maternity and newborn portfolios of the photographers and maybe decide on what you like (or perhaps don’t like). Do you prefer images taken at the studio or perhaps an in-home “lifestyle” newborn photo session is more of your jam. What props or accessories did you like? Each photographer has his or her own look and feel, we call it a “voice”, and you want to find a “voice” that is the best for you.

Book Ahead If at all possible, you want to book a photographer in your second/beginning of third trimester (2-4 months out) to guarantee a newborn photo session spot on a photographer’s calendar, especially if you are due during busier months of May-November when outdoor family photo sessions are also happening. Book your newborn session as early as possible and cross this item from your long “Preparing for Baby” to do list. Your newborn photographer, should aim to book your newborn session 7-14 days post birth date to ensure a sleepy baby that he or she can pose into those beautiful squishy and curly newborn poses.

Be sure to ask questions…Experience is very important when working with newborns. I have spent the last 9 years working with newborns and perfecting my techniques of working with

and capturing a newborn and would highly recommend working with an experienced and practiced newborn photographer. When it comes to newborn photography, price is not everything (would you want on sale sushi?)–experience, great reviews, recommendations and a beautiful portfolio that speaks to you is what you are looking for. You may also want to know more about the studio that a photographer works out of, what accessories they offer during a session, and even your color preferences. My newborn studio is well-stocked with newborn props, hats, headbands, wraps, drops, etc. I welcome questions; as I believe that the more the client knows, the better experience it will be for both of us.

The REAL reason for getting your session booked in advance is to make sure that you don’t miss that ideal window to capture your baby while they are still in that sleepy and curly newborn stage. This stage lasts about 14 days. When I book ahead, I reserve a space for the baby’s photo session on my calendar. I typically will ask for a mom’s due date and pencil the client 7-10 days out past their due date. Once the baby arrives, my clients contact me and we firm up the exact day and time of the session. As a mom of 3, I know firsthand how hectic and hard the first 2 weeks are (taking care of all of the needs of your little bunle of joy day and NIGHT–there is nothing like continued sleep deprivation), but you will not regret coming in for a few hours and capturing beautiful images of your newborn and family. I know you will treasure these newborn photos for years and years to come.

Maternity portraits are some of my favorite to photograph. It is an exciting time for each expectant family–so many emotions are there as the family awaits arrival of their +1 (or 2 oe 3). During a maternity photo session, I try to capture and convey these emotions in my photographs. During our maternity photo session, I will often ask an expectant mama to hug their belly and think about meeting and snuggling their little one for the first time, capturing the joy and happiness this thought radiates. During maternity photo sessions, the dads are also brimming with excitement, tenderness and strength. And the older siblings are often eager to kiss mom’s belly, give snuggles, and talk to their brother or sister. All happy, beautiful moments…now forever captured, documented and remembered.

I absolutely loved meeting this beautiful newborn baby girl at my Sharon, MA studio with her parents and big “dog” sister. This little lady was the sweetest little thing and posed oh-so-nicely for us. She was also amazingly calm during her awake window, and we were able to photograph gorgeous awake shots, as well.
I love meeting and photographing newborn babies and their families. Although all photographs are important, newborn photos really are most precious. I love it when clients come back for photos year throughout their big milestones. I first met this couple for their engagement photo session, I than had the pleasure of capturing their wedding, than maternity photos with baby #1 and now newborn photo session for baby #2.
